SMC/BMC Technical Insights & FAQs

  • What is the main difference between SMC and BMC application?

SMC (Sheet) is ideal for large, complex structural parts requiring high strength (e.g., auto body panels). BMC (Bulk) is better suited for smaller, intricate parts requiring high precision via injection molding.

  • How do I store SMC/BMC and what is the shelf life?

These compounds MUST be stored in a cool (<25°C), dry place, tightly wrapped in PE film to prevent styrene evaporation. Standard shelf life is 3-6 months.

  • What factors affect flowability during compression molding?

Key factors include molding temperature, pressure, the thickening curve of the compound, and fiber content. POLEMA adjusts the flow characteristics to match your tooling parameters.

Standardized Packaging for Ocean Freight
SMC is typically supplied in continuous rolls (1000kg) tightly wrapped in PE film, packed in strong wooden boxes.
BMC is provided in packed loaves (2-10kg) or as a bulk mass in plastic bags, packed in strong corrugated boxes on pallets. Climate-controlled reefers are recommended for shipping across the equator.
